My Placement Experience at Reach Advocacy
Coming from Pakistan, this placement at Reach Advocacy has been my first experience in Scotland related to human rights and social justice. Moving to a new country for university was a big step, but this placement offered me a completely new perspective on advocacy and how it works in a different cultural and social context. It has been exciting, sometimes challenging, but always inspiring.
One of my most memorable experiences was attending a workshop in Alloa. Traveling outside the city, meeting local stakeholders, and engaging with professionals from the legal and social sectors. It was eye-opening! Coming from Pakistan, where advocacy structures are very different, it was fascinating to see how organizations work together to address complex social issues and influence policy.
I have also attended workshops on human rights and health inequalities. These sessions taught me not only about the theory behind advocacy but also about practical strategies and facilitation techniques. Listening to other placement students and experts share their experiences helped me understand the challenges involved in advocacy work and reflect on how approaches differ between Scotland and Pakistan.
Presenting to stakeholders in Shettleston was another highlight. I felt nervous at first, but contributing to discussions and sharing my ideas was extremely rewarding. It helped me gain confidence and develop my communication skills in a professional setting, and I appreciated being given the opportunity to actively participate rather than just observe.
What I value most about this placement is how it has brought theory to life. Every workshop and presentation has deepened my understanding of advocacy as a dynamic, community-centered process that requires collaboration, communication, and empathy. Being part of the Reach team has also helped me feel connected in a new country and motivated me to explore how I can contribute to human rights work, both here and back home in Pakistan.
I would highly recommend this student placement to anyone interested in human rights, advocacy, or social justice. It offers the chance to gain practical experience, engage with professionals and see how human rights principles are applied in real communities. For international students like me, it provides a unique perspective on working in a new context and learning how advocacy can make a real impact.
This placement has been an inspiring start to my journey in advocacy, and I am grateful for every learning opportunity it has provided.
